Crackers Safety Tips

Golden rule: Children must always light crackers with an adult standing next to them.

Do's and Don'ts

Simple habits that prevent most accidents.

βœ” Do

  • Light crackers outdoors in an open area, away from houses, huts and dry leaves.
  • Wear cotton clothes and sturdy footwear.
  • Keep a bucket of water or sand close by.
  • Light one cracker at a time, at arm's length, and step back quickly.
  • Read the instructions on the box before you use a new item.
  • Keep spectators at a safe distance.

βœ– Don't

  • Don't light crackers indoors, on a balcony or near vehicles and petrol.
  • Don't wear loose or synthetic clothes, or dupattas that can catch fire.
  • Don't hold a cracker in your hand or lean over it while lighting.
  • Don't relight a cracker that did not burst.
  • Don't carry crackers in your pocket or keep them near a lamp or diya.
  • Don't light crackers if you feel dizzy or have been drinking.

How to light a cracker safely

Follow these five steps for every cracker.

1

Pick the spot

Choose a flat, open ground, free of anything that can burn.

2

Get ready

Keep water close by. Make sure children and pets are away.

3

Light the fuse

Use a long incense stick. Light the tip of the fuse, never the body.

4

Step back

Move away at once and watch from a safe distance.

5

Clean up

Wait at least 15 minutes, then soak used and unburst crackers in water.

Tips for each type

Every cracker behaves differently, so handle it the right way.

πŸŽ‡

Sparklers

Hold at arm's length and point it away from your body. Keep young children away. Drop used sparklers into a bucket of water, as the wire stays hot.

🌸

Flower pots

Place on a flat, hard surface where it cannot tip over. Light the fuse and move back at once. Never bend over it.

πŸš€

Rockets

Launch from a bottle or a stand, pointing straight up and away from people, houses and trees. Never launch from your hand.

πŸ’₯

Single sound crackers

Place on the ground and light from the end of the fuse. Never throw a lit cracker, and don't put it inside a tin or pot.

πŸŒ€

Chakkara

Use only on flat, open ground. Never fix it on a wall, a tree or a door. Stay back as it spins and moves.

πŸ“¦

Storing crackers

Keep them in a cool, dry place away from lamps, stoves and sunlight. Keep them in the original box, out of children's reach.

If someone gets hurt

Stay calm and act quickly.

For a minor burn

  • Hold the burnt area under cool running water for 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Remove rings or tight clothes near the burn before it swells.
  • Cover it loosely with a clean, non-fluffy cloth.
  • Don't apply ice, butter, toothpaste or oil, and don't burst any blisters.

Go to a hospital straight away for burns on the face, eyes, hands or a large area, and for any serious injury. If a cracker bursts near the eye, don't rub it. Cover it lightly and get medical help.
